Top 5 Most Counterfeited Bills In The World
Let us now understand which currencies in the world is counterfeited the most.
5. Canadian dollar
In 2011, Canada switched from paper notes to plastic, made from a polypropylene substrate. As a result, counterfeiting fell dramatically – by 74% in 2015 according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. But in the same year, the Canadian dollar was still the fifth most counterfeited currency in the world with one in 36,000 dollars faked.
But despite all the clever measures, it seems like the fraudsters might be beginning to catch up. Last year, police in the Waterloo region of the country said they saw four times as many cases (up from 20-25 to 95). It seems the fakers were getting crafty by cutting off the hologram from the five dollar note and pasting them onto a 20 bill.
4. Mexican Peso
There’s a hell of a lot of fake currency down Mexico Way. According to the Bank of Mexico, about 71 banknotes out of every million are fake, taking it to the fourth most counterfeited currency in the world in 2015. In the same year, the bank detected 306,063 counterfeit bills amounting to 99.1 million pesos or $5.4 million (£3.8 million). The most common counterfeits were 20 peso bills ($1.10/£0.70), 100 ($5.47/£3.90) and 500 ($27.40/£19.54).
The Mexican authorities are trying to get the public to hand in suspected fake notes to the bank but anyone whose note is found to be counterfeit won’t receive a legitimate note in return so this hasn’t been a huge success. Other measures like making polymer notes and introducing holographs and colour-changing ink have also been taken.
3. The Euro
Given the huge area and number of countries using the euro, it’s not surprising it’s the third most counterfeited currency in the world, with one in every 23,000 euro notes faked, according to figures from illicittrade.com/Avansa from 2015. The €20 banknote ($24.48/£17.47) remains the most popular denomination for counterfeiters, followed by the €50 ($61.20/£43.70). Together, they account for 85% of the counterfeit notes detected in the first half of 2017.
It’s not just the dollar and pound that are plagued by counterfeiters. In 2015, about 999,000 euro banknotes were counterfeit. According to European Central Bank, the 20 euro and 50 euro notes are the most counterfeited banknotes. During the last six months of 2015, counterfeit 20 euro bills accounted for 46.2 percent of the counterfeit bills.
A €20 euro is one of the more commonly counterfeited currencies.
2. US dollar
Watch your greenbacks! The US dollar is the second most counterfeited world currency. According to illicittrade.com, in 2015, one in 10,000 US dollars is forged. The $20 bill is the most commonly counterfeited banknote in the U.S., while overseas counterfeiters are more likely to make fake $100 bills.

It’s bad news for the Brits as the UK is the home of the most counterfeited currency in the world with as many as 1 in 30 pounds being forged in 2015 (Avansa). And according to the Royal Mint, around 347,000 counterfeit notes were taken out of circulation with a face value of £7.5 million ($10.5m). The vast majority of these were £20 notes.
Similarly to the U.S., the most commonly counterfeited banknote is the 20 pound note. Last year, 297,000 forged 20 pound bills were removed from circulation.
“In 2016 around 347,000 Bank of England counterfeit banknotes were taken out of circulation with a face value of £7.5 million,” according to the Royal Mint. The counterfeit 20 pound bills made up 85.6 percent of those counterfeits.
Unlike in some other countries, in the UK, counterfeiters have also targeted the coin market. The Royal Mint estimated that about 2.5% of 1.6 billion of £1 coins are fake, leading them to introduce the new 12-sided £1 coin last year. The coin features a hologram and a secret high-tech feature.
